It’s hardly the most gut-bustingly funny routine a candidate ever came up with. But President Obama’s claim that his opponent suffers from “Romnesia” appears to be going viral Friday. The odd term — a portmanteau of “Romney ” and “amnesia” — was at the top of Twitter’s trending topics in the U.S. for several hours after Obama used it in a stump speech in Virginia — an unusual feat for a political topic. At its peak at 1pm EST, Romnesia was mentioned in more than 18,000 tweets per hour. Stealing a page from the Jeff Foxworthy playbook, Obama made several jokes along the lines of “you might have Romnesia if …” at George Mason University. (See video above.) “If you come down with a case of Romnesia and you can’t seem to remember the policies that are still on your website, here is the good news: Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions,” Obama said. Not all of the tweets were positive. Houston Texans running back Arian Foster was widely retweeted when he suggested Obama’s original Romnesia tweet was the fault of an overzealous staffer:
In fact, the word appears to have been used on Twitter and Facebook long before Obama’s speechwriters picked it up. Politico traced it back to this tweet from Obama supporter @breakingnuts on March 23:
The definition was widely circulated on the Facebook page of a group called “Being Liberal” on Oct. 11.
Does Romnesia have the potential to become another “binders full of women” — or does the joke fall flat? Give us your take in the comments.
